São Luís
São Luís - A World Heritage Island
The island of São Luís is the only Brazilian capital founded by the French almost 400 years ago. It is located right in the middle of the long State of Maranhão coast. It is in a trasition region between the Northeast and North of Brazil and its sea has a warm water with sunshine almost all year long.
Great São Luís comprises the capital, São Luís, and the towns of São José de Ribamar, Paço do Lumiar and Raposa. Across the sea, you can find the lovely historical town of Alcântara, where you are suddenly sent back to the 18th century.
To visit São Luís is to witness its ethnical, cultural and musical diversity, expressed in several folk traditions, such as the Bumba-meu-Boi, Tambor de Crioula and, last but not least, reggae music, a Caribbean rhythm that has found its home in this island in Northern Brazil.
